We are grateful you have chosen to connect with us through this space.

At CAIM, we recognise profound impact that breathwork has in enhancing performance, accelerating recovery and improving overall wellbeing. Oxygen Advantage Training is one of the most scientifically supported methods for boosting endurance, mental clarity and recovery. If more athletes had access to this training during their careers, it could revolutionise performance optimisation. However, the benefits of this method extend beyond athletes; it also aids individuals looking to improve focus, resilience and overall vitality.

In May 2024, CAIM had the honour of hosting Master Instructor David 'JACKO' Jackson for his Oxygen Advantage Instructor Training. Jacko’s ability to translate complex breathwork techniques into practical applications is truly remarkable. This training deepened attendees' understanding of functional breathing, including how breathing techniques for recovery can improve endurance and mental resilience, as well as recovery breathing techniques for faster muscle repair and reduced fatigue. Many participants reported significant improvements in their breathing mechanics, energy levels, and mental focus following the training. Those who continued practising Oxygen Advantage techniques noted long-term benefits, such as better sleep, reduced anxiety, and greater lung capacity.

CAIM is proud to once again host David Jackson’s Oxygen Advantage Training retreat in May 2025. While this is David’s own retreat, CAIM is delighted to provide the space for more individuals to benefit from his expertise. This retreat offers an opportunity for people from all backgrounds to enhance their understanding of wellbeing and breath control, with the ability to apply it to various aspects of life - from athletic breathwork for performance to recovery breathing techniques for effective post-training regeneration to stress management. Whether you’re a professional athlete, an amateur HYROX competitor or someone looking to improve your overall health, this training offers tangible benefits

Introduction to Oxygen Advantage Training and Its Science-Based Approach

Breathwork goes beyond simple deep breathing – it's a scientifically-backed practice designed to optimise the body's oxygen use. When this oxygen use is optimised, it directly enhances athletic performance and breathwork techniques become key to unlocking this potential. Oxygen Advantage Training improves athletic endurance, aids recovery and enhances mental resilience by teaching individuals how to breathe more efficiently. At CAIM, we are proud to host David Jackson’s 3-day retreat, which provides a comprehensive introduction to this powerful technique.

The training covers everything from nasal breathing techniques to carbon dioxide tolerance exercises, giving participants tools to enhance their physiological efficiency and mental performance. By incorporating these techniques into daily practice, participants can significantly boost their oxygen efficiency, reduce breathlessness and experience a profound shift in energy levels.

How Breathwork Enhances Physical Performance

Improved Oxygen Utilisation and Endurance

By teaching the body to breathe more efficiently, Oxygen Advantage techniques enhance oxygen delivery to muscles, reducing breathlessness and boosting stamina. This is particularly beneficial for endurance athletes, strength trainers and anyone seeking to improve their physical capacity. Proper breathing enhances performance, allowing individuals to push their limits with less exertion. Participants learn how to control their breath to maintain steady energy levels, improve cardiovascular health and reduce unnecessary strain on the body. Additionally, improved oxygen utilisation helps prevent injuries caused by overexertion and muscular fatigue.

Supporting Energy Efficiency in Athletes

Athletes often waste energy through inefficient breathing. Oxygen Advantage Training helps individuals optimise breathing patterns, leading to better energy conservation during workouts and competitions. By reducing unnecessary breath volume and improving oxygen uptake, athletes can sustain higher performance levels while minimising fatigue. Training in functional breathing helps maintain stable oxygen levels in the blood, preventing the overuse of accessory muscles and promoting a more efficient metabolic state for athletic longevity. Enhanced energy efficiency also means quicker recovery times, enabling athletes to maintain peak conditioning throughout the season.

The Role of Breathwork in Recovery

Accelerating Muscle Recovery and Reducing Fatigue

Effective breath control boosts oxygen flow to tissues, reducing inflammation and muscle soreness after intense training sessions. Oxygen Advantage Training supports a faster return to peak performance by promoting quicker muscle recovery and reducing lactic acid buildup, leading to fewer aches and pains post-workout. By mastering breath retention techniques, participants can increase blood circulation and nutrient delivery to muscles, accelerating the body’s ability to repair itself after exertion. Improved circulation also helps detoxify the body, removing metabolic waste more efficiently.

Optimising the Nervous System for Relaxation

Breathwork techniques like controlled nasal breathing, slow, deep diaphragmatic breathing, and breath-holding exercises stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system, transitioning the body from a high-intensity ‘fight or flight’ mode into a state of ‘rest and recovery.’ This shift lowers cortisol levels, improves sleep quality, and restores overall balance, making recovery more effective. At CAIM, participants are guided through structured breathing sessions by David and his team to improve heart rate variability (HRV), a key measure of nervous system balance, which is critical for effective recovery and overall wellbeing.

For stress management through breathwork, these techniques are invaluable. They help regulate emotions, reduce mental tension, and enhance mental resilience, making it easier to manage stress and avoid shifting the nervous system into an activated state.

Managing Stress and Enhancing Mental Clarity Through Breath Control

Beyond its physical benefits, Oxygen Advantage breathing techniques improve cognitive function and mental resilience. Controlled breathing helps reduce mental chatter, improve focus and create a sense of calm. These techniques are especially useful for those navigating high-pressure situations, whether in sports, business or daily life. By incorporating breath-holding exercises and nasal breathing strategies, participants can sharpen their ability to cultivate calm under pressure, improving decision-making and mental endurance. Long-term benefits include heightened emotional intelligence, greater self-awareness and a deeper sense of clarity in both personal and professional life.
